Check the Domain Transfer Lock Before a Name Moves

A domain transfer lock blocks a move to another registrar. It does not stop a login from pointing the name elsewhere. I look after the site from $99 a month.

Soft bounced daylight on a salon marble station: domain transfer lock shown as a brass padlock through a closed stone drawer pull, an unmarked slip half out of an open drawer, and a wax-sealed brass key beside an unsealed spare.

A salon booking page can still load while the name that leads there is free to leave. A domain transfer lock is the switch at the registrar that stops that name from being sent to another company. Leave it off, and the login that pays the renewal can move the name without editing a single page.

Short answer: Turn the domain transfer lock on at the registrar, and keep that login with you. The lock blocks a transfer to another registrar. It does not block a password holder from pointing the name somewhere else. Managed Website Hosting & Care looks after the site itself from $99 a month, with the domain staying yours. You can cancel any time.

What does a domain transfer lock actually stop?

A domain transfer lock is a switch at the registrar that blocks sending the name to a different registrar. It does not block a login that already exists from editing where the name points. Turn it on, and keep the registrar password with you.

The registrar is who you pay for the name. The host stores the pages. The lock answers one question: can this name move to a different registrar today? A locked website login stops a stranger from editing pages. An open registrar account can start a transfer while the files stay put.

How do I see whether the lock is on?

Sign in at the company that registered the name, not the company that hosts the files. Look for transfer lock, registrar lock, or domain lock, and leave it on. A free lookup names that company and the date the name expires, before you change anything.

Open the email that pays for the name. If you cannot find the registrar, the free who hosts my website lookup lists the registrar, the host, who runs DNS, who handles email, and the date the domain expires. No password needed. It does not turn the lock on. It tells you which login to open.

Look for a toggle labeled transfer lock, registrar lock, or domain lock. On should refuse a transfer. Leave it on unless you started a move. If the contact email sits in an old developer’s inbox, that person can turn the lock off. Getting the login back is separate: take over a website and website takeover. Do not change where the name points while you only mean to check the lock.

If the lock is on, what can that login still change?

A stolen registrar login can still change the address the name points at, and the site goes dark or shows someone else’s page. The lock only stops a transfer to another registrar. Change the password, turn the lock on, and write down who receives the renewal email.

Pointing sends visitors to another server. Transferring moves the account to another registrar. The domain transfer lock covers only the transfer. A person who can sign in can still change the address.

Set a password only you store, and put the contact email on an inbox you open. Confirm the lock, the password, and that email. A new name, or one that just moved between registrars, can sit in a waiting period before another transfer. That wait is not your switch. When it ends, a name with the lock off can leave. If the site shows a stranger’s page, read the lock and the address before you rebuild.

What does care cover, and what stays in my name?

You keep the domain and the content. I host and maintain the site, or I look after it on the host you already pay, and I store a daily backup separately. I do not take the registrar account. You can ask for a full copy of the site any time.

The plan is the site, not that toggle. Every plan includes hosting and SSL, daily backups stored separately, core, plugin, and theme updates, uptime monitoring around the clock, and security hardening: locked-down logins, firewall rules, and safe defaults. That is a different lock from the one on the name.

You can keep your current host at the same price. Your host keeps billing you. I still store a daily backup separately, which matters if the name is pointed away. Restoring it, or fixing a break on my watch, is included. Priority’s dedicated server applies only when I host. On Essentials and Business, an outage goes to the front of the line during business hours. Priority gets 24/7 response if the site goes down.

Moving one standard site in is included: I copy it, test it, then switch the domain at a quiet time. Turn the domain transfer lock off only if the registration itself must move, then back on. A large online store or a custom app gets a fixed quote first. Small edits use the monthly time, then $125 an hour. I tell you before going over. Unused time does not roll over. Email a link or a screenshot to michael@michaelheredia.com. Checkout takes a couple of minutes, and I email within 1 business day to start onboarding. You do not manage a server login or a control panel.

Which plan fits if I still hold the name?

Essentials is $99 a month, with 30 minutes of changes and a reply within 2 business days. Business is $249 a month, with 1 hour, staging before it goes live, and malware cleanup included. Priority is $499 a month, with 3 hours and 24/7 response if the site goes down.

PlanPriceWhat you keep, and what I watch
Essentials$99 a monthYou keep the domain. Backups, monitoring, and a fix on my watch are included. 30 minutes of changes. Malware cleanup is $125 an hour.
Business (most popular)$249 a monthEverything in Essentials, plus 1 hour of changes, updates tested on a staging copy before they go live, and malware cleanup included.
Priority$499 a monthEverything in Business, plus 3 hours of changes, a dedicated server when I host, and 24/7 response if the site goes down.

“Most popular” is only the label on Business. The price is the same if I host or if you keep your host. See the plans. You can cancel any time.

When this isn’t the right fit

A monthly plan keeps the site you already have online, updated, and backed up, while the domain stays yours. It is the wrong fit when the pages need a redesign first, or when someone on staff already holds the registrar, the backups, and the small edits.

A redesign, a new feature, an online store, or an integration is a fixed price before work starts. If the pages are the problem, start with web development. Care can follow that build. It does not replace it. On cancel, the plan runs to the end of the paid month. Before it ends, you get a full copy and help pointing the domain to a new host.

See the plans, or send a question through the hosting form. I reply by email. A screenshot of the lock screen helps.

FAQ

What is a domain transfer lock? +

A domain transfer lock is a switch at the registrar, the company that registered the name. Turned on, it blocks sending that name to a different registrar. It does not stop someone who already has that login from changing where the name points. You keep the domain. I do not take the registrar account when I look after the site.

Will the plan turn the domain transfer lock on for me? +

No. The lock sits in the registrar account, and that account stays yours. I can host the site, or look after it on the host you already pay, at the same plans and the same price. Your host keeps billing you. Security hardening means locked-down site logins, firewall rules, and safe defaults. That is not the domain transfer lock.

What do the plans cost if I still hold the name? +

Essentials is $99 a month, Business is $249 a month, and Priority is $499 a month, billed through Stripe. You can cancel any time. Every plan includes hosting, SSL, backups stored separately, updates, monitoring around the clock, and a fix if something breaks on my watch. After the included time, changes are $125 an hour, and I tell you first.

If I cancel, do you keep my domain? +

No. You keep the domain and the content. The plan runs to the end of the paid month. Before it ends you get a full copy of the site and help pointing the domain to a new host. One standard move-in is copied, tested, then the domain is switched at a quiet time.
